Sochie Nnaemeka is a native New Yorker and daughter of Nigerian immigrant parents. She most recently served as the Director of the New York Working Families Party, NY’s progressive political party. In that role, she rebuilt the flagship chapter of the WFP— securing the party’s ballot line, developing strong internal governance and a robust membership model, driving political strategy that elected values-aligned elected officials from City Council to Congress and delivered policy wins for working people, including passing record taxes on the wealthy to invest in the common good.
A committed organizer and political strategist, she cut her teeth organizing with Unite Here at the intersection of labor and community, including running worker leaders for office in New Haven, CT organizing casino workers in South Florida. From 2017 to 2019, Sochie served as Director of Emerging Organizing and Leadership at the Center for Popular Democracy where she launched and supported new grassroots people’s organizations, including Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (BLOC) in Milwaukee, Detroit Action, and Step Up Louisiana. In that capacity she mentored and coached new executive leaders and organizing directors—in particular young people, women, and leaders of color—as they cultivated memberships, built power, and transformed their communities.
Sochie is a graduate of Yale College and received her JD from Georgetown Law, where she studied how labor law can better protect, serve, and embolden working people. She lives in Takoma Park, MD with her husband and two sons.
