SCOTUS Guts the Voting Rights Act. This is a Crisis.

April 29,2026

The Democracy Alliance today issued the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais effectively dismantles Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, one the most hard-won achievements of the civil rights movement. It is a body-blow to our democracy and a direct attack on Black political power.

Yet, we are not surprised. The right has telegraphed this for years, systematically dismantling voting protections ruling by ruling, as part of a deliberate strategy to entrench their own power by suppressing Black votes. As Justice Kagan wrote in dissent, the consequences will likely be “far-reaching and grave,” rendering Section 2 of the VRA “all but a dead letter.”

We refuse to accept it.

Organizers across the South already have the strategies to fight back. What they need is the resources. The Democracy Alliance will stand with them, fund them, and rally our broader community to meet this moment with the urgency it demands. We will not surrender what generations before us bled for.

The era of Jim Crow suppression will not return on our watch.”
