Catalist provides data and data-related services exclusively to progressive organizations to help them better identify, understand, and communicate with the people they need to persuade and mobilize.

For nearly a decade, Catalist has been the data utility powering the progressive community. Owned by a trust, Catalist collaborates with data-driven progressive organizations with a variety of goals: issue advocates, organizers, pollsters, analysts, consultants, campaigners, researchers, and more.

Catalist compiles, enhances, stores, and dynamically updates data on over 240 million unique voting-age individuals across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, helping organizations to build membership, target persuasive messaging, engage activists, drive an issue agenda, and mobilize voters.

Working exclusively with progressive organizations that share the organization’s values, Catalist’s client list includes issue advocates, labor organizers, pollsters, analysts, consultants, campaigns, and more.

The Catalist database

Catalist’s national database contains more than 240 million unique voting-age individuals. The database has a rich, reliable foundation of 185 million registered voters – a unified national voter file – collected from Election Officials in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Commercial data adds another 55 million unregistered individuals and enhances the entire database with hundreds of fields, including household attributes, purchasing and investment profiles, donation behavior, occupational information, recreational interests, and engagement with civic and community groups. Catalist also integrates data from the Census, specialty data, and media market geographies.

Continuously updated through state file acquisitions, commercial refreshes, National Change of Address processing, and other routine data hygiene, the Catalist national database helps organizations and campaigns find and contact their members, supporters, and future supporters where they are now, with the history of where they have been.

Catalist data is continually updated and audited by data quality experts. Catalist’s Data Operations team adheres to a rigorous multi-step quality assurance process that ensures that each update improves the quality of the database. Catalist data and models are also continually improved with new data returned to Catalist by partners and clients. This virtuous circle ensures the national file is more accurate and more powerful for Catalist clients.

Catalist’s database holds the most comprehensive and accurate modeling suite available to the progressive community today. Its models and synthetic variables are extensively and successfully used across the community to inform program decisions.

Each day, through Catalist’s permanent national data warehouse systems, a wide range of progressive organizations are extracting, exchanging, and storing data about the “civic transactions” they are conducting with individuals across the country. Every piece of individual data remains the sole property of the organization that loads it, but Catalist’s unique ability to aggregate data at the individual level across so many channels and organizational sources allows Catalist to continuously build and refine data synthetics and predictive models.

Working with Catalist

Working exclusively with progressive organizations that share the organization’s values, Catalist’s client list includes issue advocates, labor organizers, pollsters, analysts, consultants, campaigns, and more.

The organization offers several services and products, including:

  • Subscriptions: Catalist works with organizations to tailor Data Subscriptions to their needs and budgets. Subscriptions provide the option of predictable annual fees – helping its clients reduce per-record and per-use charges for data services and enhancements.
  • Analytics & models: Catalist models help organizations with their strategic planning, program execution, and are used extensively as powerful inputs to custom models. Available through proprietary software, these models can help organizations identify communication targets based on their civic behavior, political attitudes, and issue preferences.
  • Software: Catalist’s web-based software uniquely gives subscribers direct 24/7 access to their proprietary data alongside Catalist’s national database and suite of models.
  • Data Integrations: Catalist has built a suite of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to provide additional flexibility for clients, facilitate data transfer, and support app development.

The Resistance

Since the 2016 Election, Catalist continued to provide high-quality data and modeling to much of the progressive community, including many of the new resistance organizations that were established after President Trump’s election. Alongside this work, Catalist also launched and conducted the Peoria Project, an ambitious research project that examined Americans’ core beliefs across the full political spectrum and unearthed new ways to understand, identify, and listen to audiences across our society in the hopes of changing how progressives communicate with voters in issue advocacy and electoral campaigns.
